Reuters reports the White House adjusted national security Section 232 tariffs to cut duty rates on certain steel, aluminum, and copper derivative products while keeping a 50% base tariff on the metal commodities.
Under the updated structure, derivative products with less than 15% metal content by weight are exempt, while products with more than 15% metal content face a 25% tariff on the total import value; some industrial and electrical grid equipment is reduced to 15% through 2027.
For automotive retail, the near-term signal is parts and accessory landed-cost volatility, and potentially faster OEM price and allocation changes as suppliers reprice contracts and compliance gets simplified.
What this means for dealers: Watch parts matrices and body shop estimates, because sudden duty band changes can show up as higher OEM and aftermarket part prices even if vehicle MSRPs lag.
