NHTSA flags DTN aftermarket driver air bag inflators: 12 ruptures, 10 deaths
NHTSA issued an initial decision on April 2, 2026, concluding that certain frontal driver air bag inflators made by Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd. (DTN) contain a safety-related defect. NHTSA cites 12 ruptures in the U.S. that ejected metal debris into the cabin, resulting in 10 fatalities and 2 severe injuries. NHTSA says the inflators were imported by unknown importers, likely illegally, and at least ten of the twelve incidents involved aftermarket replacement inflators installed after prior crashes. If NHTSA makes a final defect determination, sale of the inflators or air bag modules containing them for installation in vehicles in the U.S. would be illegal.
What this means for dealers: Review air bag part sourcing policies now, especially for collision related work and sublet, and train advisors to flag non-OE inflator labels before any install.
